Upazila Freedom Fighters Command extorts money from freedom fighters! The news published on March 31, 2011, the last day of the month of independence, on Bangla daily Prothom Alo drew my attention. The incident took place in Kasba, Brahmanbaria. Upazila Muktijoddha Command extorted Tk 2,000 from freedom fighters.
According to the report, the authorities recently selected 208 freedom fighters of the upazila (sub-district) for monthly allowance. They were paid Tk 12,000 each on March 29, 2011 in allowances for six months.
Soon after they withdrew the money, Muktijoddha Bohumukhi Kalyan Samity took Tk 2,000 from each of them forcibly.
Freedom fighter subedar (rtd) Abdul Salam alleged that they did not want to pay the money.
Freedom Fighter Ohid Mia said he was threatened to take his name off the list of freedom fighters as he refused to pay the money.
Azizur Rahman, commander of Kosba Upazila Freedom Fighters, and his deputy Kuddusur Reza said they took the money to create a fund of the association of the war heroes.
Mohammad Harunur Rashid, commander of Brahmanbaria district freedom fighters, said collection of tolls this way needs permission of the high command. “It’s illegal if the money was taken without such approval,” he said.
Mostafa Mahmud Sarwar, social welfare officer of Kosba Upazila, said no organization named Muktijoddha Bohumukhi Kalyan Samity is registered.
